Why Undergo Adolescent Orthodontic Treatment?
Most people undergo orthodontic treatment between the ages of 11 and 15. This is because by the age of 12, most individuals have lost their baby teeth, and all their permanent teeth have erupted into place. This leaves any crooked teeth, gaps, or bite abnormalities easy to spot. Because these problems usually don’t correct themselves after an individual has lost all of their baby teeth, many parents seek out orthodontic treatment for their children at this time to prevent them from getting worse or leading to other health complications in the future.
Receiving braces at a younger age can provide your child with the gift of healthy teeth for life. Straight teeth and a properly aligned jaw bring people a number of emotional and medical benefits, including:
- Decreased likelihood of developing periodontal disease or gingivitis
- Lowered chance of losing teeth later in life
- Increased self-esteem and confidence
What is Adolescent Orthodontic Treatment Like?
Your child’s orthodontic treatment will begin with a series of scans and examinations. Using this information, our orthodontist, Dr. Danilee K. Baldwin, will devise a comprehensive treatment plan to move your child’s jaw and teeth into their proper positions.
While orthodontic treatment is a little different for every individual, adolescent orthodontic treatment typically involves either braces or Invisalign, with the possibility of additional orthodontic appliances.
How long does Treatment Usually Last?
While the length of adolescent orthodontic treatment can vary dramatically from patient-to-patient, it generally lasts between six and thirty months. Following this treatment period, patients are required to wear a retainer for another few months. In most cases, Dr. Baldwin recommends that these retainers be worn at night for the rest of the patient’s life to maintain the results of their orthodontic treatment.
